Skincare Basics Part 2: Selecting a Moisturizer

Posted by Lindsay Eberhart

This is the continuation of a series on skincare basics. Start with part 1 CLEANSING, then meet me back here.

As always, My goal is to educate you to get you on the right home care products for your skin so you can get on a path to achieving the skin you want and deserve. Let's continue.

 --------------Homecare basics-----------------

If you like to skim, we are talking about MOISTURIZING here.

MOISTURIZING- I like the terms, “hydrating” or “hydrators” as many of my clients will attest to, so I often use them interchangeably with “moisturizers” and “creams” when I am coaching you on your regimens. I also like to use terms that you as consumers are familiar with vs scientific language; so either is acceptable here.

Moisturizing is the act of putting water or oil into the skin to increase hydration level, comfort level and keep your natural barrier intact and happy.

Many hydrators are multi-taskers; they can serve several purposes for you. For example, some deliver antioxidant and vitamin nutrients to the skin, some contain exfoliants that help shed dead skin and encourage new cells to come forward, some contain anti-inflammatory properties to soothe sensitive or acne-prone skin, some contain SPF, all while providing essential moisture.

We like multi-tasking products, because this simplifies your steps at home while still delivering the results you want.

You will likely be moisturizing two times daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Selecting the right one for your skin is important. This depends on your skincare goals as well; what you want to change and improve about your skin.

You may find that you enjoy a different moisturizer during the day than in the evening. Many of my clients prefer a lighter hydration for daytime use since they'll then be topping that with SPF. Since we don’t use SPF in the evening regimen, many opt for a richer cream at night. *It is also common to adjust your moisturizers during different seasons of the year to meet your needs.*

-------Daytime Moisturizers-------

Face Lift Moisturizer- *for oily, combination and normal types especially those who prefer an airy-light cream hydrator. Contains antioxidants and botanical stem cells. Typically loved by my clients 35 and under.

Power Lift Moisturizer- *for dry, normal, combination and aging skin types who want to plump the skin with a richer cream. Contains advanced peptides for wrinkle-relaxing and collagen-boosting.

Vital C Hydrating Facial Oil- *for dry, combination and normal skin. For those who enjoy the feel of an oil. A couple of drops can also be added to your hydrator or SPF for a boost of radiance and softness. Gives a nice dewy look to the skin.

Solar Defense Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30- *safe on all skin types, including acne. Very lightweight and a sheer tint to lightly cover imperfections. If you want more coverage and evening of skin tone, select this instead. Leaves a semi-matte finish. Warm and press this between your fingers before applying. You may find this is enough moisture for you without a cream underneath if you’re also using a serum that contains hydrating properties.

Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturizer SPF 32- *best for oily, acne and anyone who prefers a matte finish. Great alone or as a primer for makeup. Non-greasy and won’t break you out. This is the only sunscreen my husband will use. You may want a serum or hydrator underneath this.

Prevention+ Daily Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30- *good for all skin types, has the medium coverage of a CC cream to even skin tone, redness and imperfections. Leaves a matte-semi matte finish. Warm this and press it between your fingertips before applying to ease the application. If you prefer a sheer tinted coverage, select this instead. Can be mixed with a non-tinted SPF to create the perfect coverage you desire. I love adding 1 drop of Vital C Hydrating Facial Oil or a drop of Vital C Hydrating Anti-aging Serum to this for a dewier finish.

-------Nighttime Moisturizers------

This is where proper CLEANSING comes into play. You need your skin to be a fresh canvas to absorb the wonderful ingredients that are about to work on your skin while you sleep. If you use a serum, apply that first, then your moisturizer.

You can use more than one of these on alternating nights. For example, one night you could use Vital C Hydrating Repair Creme and the next night you could use a retinol product. Rotating products is the best way to get a full spectrum of ingredients and benefits. Check with your physician before using retinol if you’re nursing or pregnant.

Vital C Hydrating Repair Creme- *this is universally loved by all skin types including sensitive. Contains vitamin C,  potent antioxidants and a low level of vitamin A. This is a wonderful creme to nourish the skin nightly, or to use as a nighttime rotation creme.

AGELESS Total Repair Creme- *for all skin types except very sensitive. Contains a blend of glycolic acid and retinol for anti-aging and controlling breakouts. This is the perfect introductory retinol product if you have never used one before. It is common for this to tingle when you apply it. Do not use around eyes or corners of the mouth and nose. I like to rotate this product a few nights a week with other evening creams. For acne, try 1-2x weekly. Must use daily SPF with this product. If you prefer a retinol without exfoliating acids, choose Nimni Face Cream.

ILUMA Intense Brightening Creme- *made for brightening hyperpigmentation, sun spots, age spots, freckles or hormonal discoloration on the skin. Hydroquinone-free. Best results come when paired with Iluma Serums. Safe to use nightly, but also wonderful used on rotation/alternate nights with AGELESS Total Repair Creme or Total Retinol A Creme. Daily SPF is essential to see sustained results.

The MAX Stem Cell Creme- *best for aging, dry, sensitive skin. Excellent to use if you can’t tolerate retinol or exfoliating acids. Adds incredible hydrating and plumping to the skin, while softening expression lines. Can be used nightly and also on rotation/alternate nights with other creams.

Total Retinol A Creme- *for experienced retinol users only, this is the ultimate advanced retinol option for aging and acne. Versatile and may be used alone several nights per week or mixed into other IMAGE cremes. Contains glycolic and lactic acids, plus encapsulated retinol for a time-released effect. Tingling is common after application. SPF is essential during the day while using this. If you prefer or need a retinol without exfoliating acids, choose Nimni Face Cream.

Nimni Face Cream- *for intermediate-advanced retinol users, this powerful blend of time-released retinol, amino acids and vitamin c is a patented ultimate creme for anti-aging, reducing wrinkles and firming the skin. Begin using 1-2x weekly in the evening, avoiding the eye area. Daily SPF use is essential.

Face Lift and Power Lift- I talk about these above in the daytime section. You may also use these at night if you wish to keep your routine more simple or to rotate with Nimni Face Cream.
